Canvas book bag design raises funds for safe schools in Nigeria

While I was visiting my grandparents in India this year, our car stopped at a traffic light in Mumbai.

A girl no older than 10 knocked on my window and begged me to buy a copy of the book I Am Malala.

How ironic! This book was written by someone who did everything in her power to get the education she deserved and was sold to me by someone who was on the streets when she should have been in school.

It was then that I realised I had a responsibility to help connect those faced with adversities to a world of education. I enjoy learning and I believe education is the key to a better future.

Each year since fifth grade, I’ve been making art projects and selling them locally to raise money for causes dear to my heart.

This year, after becoming a Global Youth Ambassador for A World at School, I decided to create canvas book bags with my drawing of a young girl reading. The idea was to make an education related item that is useful.

I had a great response and was able to raise a total of $2260. I am donating the money to the relief and recovery of the Nigerian girls affected by Boko Haram.

Going forward, I intend to continue fundraising through my art for A World at School.

You can also donate to the Safe Schools Fund for Nigeria.
