Theirworld is an influential global charity aiming to end the global education crisis and unleash the potential of the next generation. We work to ensure that every child has the best start in life, a safe place to learn, and skills for the future. To achieve this, we are tackling the lack of political will, financial commitment and action that is currently preventing the realisation of inclusive, quality education for all children. We bring together experience and evidence from our research and projects alongside the passion and power of our campaigns and communications to unlock the big, transformational changes needed to end the global education crisis.
We have existed since 2002, and we are currently going through an exciting period of growth and transformation - assembling a world-class team of campaigners, communicators, researchers, advocates and project managers with the skills, commitment to our mission, and strong team spirit and creative energy to turn the organisation’s vision into reality.
About the role
One of these critical new hires is a fantastic Education Financing Policy and Advocacy Manager. We are looking for a strong, experienced advocate who will play a leading role in efforts in 2020 to secure the largest investment in education in history – mobilising $5bn from donor countries into the new International Finance Facility for Education (IFFEd) and secure other commitments to increase funding for education. You will also have the opportunity to help set the strategic direction for our advocacy on education financing in 2021 and beyond.
The Education Financing Policy and Advocacy Manager will report to the Director of Policy, Advocacy and Programs and be based in our London office, with occasional domestic and international travel as required.
- Lead the development of advocacy strategies and their implementation and coordination to achieve our 2020 goals in education financing.
Undertake policy analysis and manage any external research to formulate evidence-based advocacy asks, messages and recommendations (e.g. briefings, reports).
Lead on political outreach and relationship-building with key stakeholders and represent Theirworld at external advocacy meetings/events.
Brief and support senior staff with high-level political outreach and advocacy meetings/events.
Coordinate and collaborate with campaign and communications staff to enable the development and deployment of effective, targeted campaigns and communications assets and activities to support advocacy efforts.
Coordinate and collaborate with our program activities to ensure that the experience and evidence from those activities is informing and helping drive global advocacy efforts, and that you are providing advocacy support to help enable local/national scale-up efforts in those programs.
Coordinate and collaborate with our Global Youth Ambassadors and Global Business Coalition for Education members to engage them as advocacy champions and spokespeople.
Monitor and record Theirworld’s impact with education financing target stakeholders and maintain internal systems and provide updates/information to assist with impact reporting.
Work with communications and partnerships/fundraising colleagues to help pursue opportunities for funding for Theirworld’s education financing advocacy efforts.
Experience, skills and character
You should have:
Approximately 5+ years’ experience working on complex policy issues related to international aid and innovative financing and/or education (e.g. for government, donor/multilateral agency, or NGO).
Strong track-record of working in public affairs, developing and delivering successful political influencing strategies to achieve results.
Strong passion for and knowledge of addressing education financing issues and the different stakeholders and processes involved.
Excellent policy analysis skills and experience in managing policy-related research.
Excellent experience of representing an organisation externally at advocacy events and briefing/supporting senior staff.
Experience of managing projects and organising large public events.
Excellent writing and communication skills.
A collaborative, hands-on attitude and team player approach.
A problem-solving mindset and ability to take initiative and think outside the box.
Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills with good attention to detail, ability work under pressure and to deadlines, and generally to have a high bar for quality in your own work as well as your colleagues.
A commitment to Theirworld’s aims and a clear understanding of the contribution that campaigning can make to achieve our mission and how it can best link with other parts of the organisation’s work.
Advantage if you had fluency in a European language other than English.
Experience with youth advocacy and engagement would be a strong plus.
