One in 12 babies in the UK are born prematurely, which can profoundly affect a child’s health and development. But we’re still learning exactly how.

The Theirworld Edinburgh Birth Cohort is a world-first research programme studying 400 children, born preterm and full term, all the way into adulthood.

The study has made excellent progress in identifying preterm children’s learning and development difficulties in their early years. Now, as the cohort reaches the age of seven and formal schooling is underway, the research is entering a new phase: discovering how their early challenges affect their learning – and how we can help.

Its findings will provide essential evidence to scientists, doctors, parents, policy-makers and educators.
