Context

The war in Ukraine has severely disrupted education. Millions have been forced to flee the country, and thousands of schools have been damaged.

Approach

The Stay With Ukraine project, delivered by NGO Smart Osvita, is helping displaced Ukrainian children to continue the education they received before the war.

Staying connected to home

With support from Theirworld and the Global Business Coalition for Education, Smart Osvita is delivering online lessons in Ukrainian language, culture and history to 700 students aged 10-17.

Children take part in the lessons at the weekends, supplementing the curriculum they are studying in their adopted countries. The lessons help refugee children stay in touch with their homeland and talk to other Ukrainian students in different countries.

Continuing to study in their own language supports children’s mental health during a time of trauma and reduces disruption if and when they do return to school in Ukraine.
