Child bride or schoolgirl? Music video shows heartbreaking reality in Chad

A girl in Chad is more likely to die in childbirth than attend secondary school. That grim message sets the scene for a video that is both heartbreaking and hopeful and has just racked up more than 100,000 views on YouTube.

In the African country, 68% of girls are married off as children – wrecking their hopes of education and a brighter future.

Bruno Maes, UNICEF Representative in Chad, said: “Girls who are married before their 18th birthdays are not only denied their childhood but are often socially isolated and subjected to violence, and limited opportunities for education and employment.”

UNICEF, the United Nations children's agency, turned to American musician and producer RL Grimes to provide a haunting backdrop for this video shot in Chad.
