Global faiths community pledges support for education
After signing up 500 Global Youth Ambassadors and the world leaders of the Emergency Coalition for Global Education Action, A World at School can now count on the support of major faiths-based organisations backing the Global Faiths Coalition for Education (GFC Education).
GFC Education brings together a diverse range of faiths-based communities to support the universal right to education and mobilise their supporters at key points in lead up to the Millennium Development Goal Two deadline in 2015.
GFC Education members are united in their adherence to the principles of the GFC Education Statement in Support of Faith and Education:
Education is a fundamental right of every child, the key to expanded opportunity, and a source of peace, prosperity, employment and social cohesion. We find common ground in the desire to realise the right of every child to a free, quality education by the end of 2015 and the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal Two.
We join together in a Global Faiths Coalition for Education, not to advocate for religious education or preference of one religious doctrine over another, but instead to realise our common goal of education for the 57 million out-of-school children.
We pledge to support efforts to end injustices against children, including forced marriage, discrimination and child labour. The Coalition endeavours to work collaboratively with the faiths community, governments, and NGOs to achieve education for all.
These major organisations are among the first to back the GFC Education Statement and are ready to take up major calls to action around the 500-Day Countdown Campaign:
- American Hindu World Service (AHWS)
- Arigatou International
- Association of Christian Mothers for Assistance to Vulnerables (AMCAV – Congo)
- Catholic Education Commission of Malawi | Episcopal Conference of Malawi
- Islamic Society of North America (ISNA)
- Muslim Aid
- New Era Educational and Charitable Support Foundation (NEEDCSI – Nigeria)
- Sojourners
- Taheedul Relief Trust
- World Evangelical Alliance (WEA)
- World Faith | Interfaith Youth In Action
