Google tribute to Nelson Mandela’s famous quote on education

The anniversary of Nelson Mandela's birthday is being celebrated today by Google.

In one of their popular Google Doodles – which appear on their main search pages – an interactive illustration shows the late South African leader and some of his most famous quotes.

They include a drawing of Mr Mandela reading a book while imprisoned on Robben Island with his quote: “Education is the most powerful weapon which can change the world.”

The Doodle shows the village where he grew up and some of the important scenes from his life.

Mr Mandela was born 96 years ago today. After becoming leader of the African National Congress, he spent 27 years in prison before being freed after a worldwide campaign.

He later became president of South Africa and died last year.
