“Our children deserve a peaceful future and sport is a most effective tool to promote those values”

To mark International Youth Day tomorrow and its theme of peace-building, one of our Global Youth Ambassadors from Pakistan explains how sport can be used as a tool to create peace.

I believe in peace-building through sports and have been implementing it for the last three years through Kafka Welfare Organization Pakistan

In 2015, I became a part of Young Leaders Program by the United Nations Office on Sports for Development and Peace. Currently, I am doing my Masters in South Korea and my research is also focused on this area.

While studying I also volunteer as a coach with Korean Sharing Movement, which is a nonprofit organisation implementing the Sports for Development and  Peace campaign by Football 4 Peace UK in Korea.

It teaches Korean children values like diversity, fairness, inclusion, and consideration through football and sport. It also promotes better physical and mental health.

Recently we involved both reconciled North Korean and South Korean children in sports activities for three weeks.

They learned how to work as a team and developed trust with each other, helping them to build unity regardless of any differences.

The children’s feedback was very positive and they had clearly understood the values we had been trying to teach.

Also their universal love for football certainly came through, which is exactly the point.

Our children deserve a peaceful and bright future and sport is a most effective tool to promote values leading to peace.
