Theirworld – Report: Partnering for a Better Future: Ensuring Educational Opportunity for All Syrian Refugee Children and Youth in Turkey (September 2015)
One of a series of reports by Theirworld, in conjunction with A World at School and the Global Business Coalition for Education that were written after consultation with the governments of Jordan, Turkey and Lebanon.
When it was written in September 2015, Turkey was hosting almost two million Syrian refugees, around 2.5% of its total population. This was in addition to 214,795 refugees and asylum seekers from elsewhere.
At the time there were about 621,000 Syrian school-aged refugee children in Turkey, of whom, 394,000 were not in school. Turkey is committed to providing education for all children in the country but faces huge challenges in dealing with the influx of refugee children it is trying to cope with.
The report praised Turkey’s generous response to the Syrian crisis and said it needs more support from the international community to continue this work in the long term.
It identified five key opportunities for the international community and Turkey to work in partnership to ensure educational opportunities are delivered to all refugee children.
