Global star Justin Bieber has become the latest celebrity to sign the #UpForSchool Petition.

The 21-year-old Canadian singer posted on Facebook today: “Standing #UpForSchool for the 58 million children around the world who will never see a single day of school because of child labor, early marriage, conflict and discrimination.”

Justin – who lives in the United States – asked his fans to also sign the petition, which has been signed almost seven million times. A World at School’s youth-led campaign calls on world leaders to keep their promise made in 2000 to get every child around the world into school and learning, without fear of danger or discrimination.

Within two hours, his posting had been liked almost 70,000 times. On his Facebook page, fan Ebony said: “This is a very great cause. God bless and hope every child gets an education.”

Another follower, Angela, said: “It’s great that Justin Bieber is helping children out of school.”

Justin is known for his charitable work as well as huge hits like Boyfriend. He supports Pencils of Promise, a charity that builds schools in developing countries.

He won a 2014 Young Hollywood Award for his work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation after making more than 200 wishes come true for fans.

Justin performed in the Philippines for victims of Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 and saw humanitarian programmes run by Action Against Hunger. He had already been involved in fundraising for victims of the typhoon.

A World at School Campaigns Director Ben Hewitt said: “Having the support of Justin Bieber is a huge boost to the campaign and gets our message heard far and wide.

“He is able to share the campaign directly with millions of people worldwide helping to make this one of the world’s biggest ever petitions. The #UpForSchool campaign is led by young people around the world demanding action on education and it is exciting that Justin Bieber has signed the petition and thrown his support behind it.

“Together we can create a message that no world leader can ignore.”

Other celebrities who have signed #UpForSchool include Rod Stewart, Shakira, Heidi Klum and Kim Cattrall.
