Major new philanthropic commitments back education amid global conflict and pressure on aid systems
The Andrew Carnegie Foundation, the El-Erian Family Foundation and Coefficient Giving employ innovative financing approaches with Theirworld for children and young people
Global education charity Theirworld has announced a series of major philanthropic commitments to support education innovation, youth peacebuilding and early years support, amid growing global conflict and increasing pressure on international aid systems.
The commitments, totalling $1.6 million, from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation, the El-Erian Family Foundation and Coefficient Giving reflect growing donor interest in investing in long-term, systems-focused approaches to supporting children and young people.
In a show of support for education as a transformative investment for long-term social and economic impact, the El Erian Family Foundation has announced a gift of $1 million, enabling Theirworld to scale the reach of ten education innovators and deliver emergency education and programming to support preschool children in Gaza.
The Andrew Carnegie Foundation, formerly Carnegie Corporation of New York, will contribute $400,000 over 18 months to help Theirworld’s Global Youth Ambassadors’ ‘Peace, Security and Education Task Team’, a specialised youth-led advocacy group (aged 18-28) advancing peace and security through educational programming at the subnational and global level.
Coefficient Giving’s commitment of $267,640 to Theirworld will support a year-long initiative to identify innovative financing solutions for the next generation of international development and aid, with a focus on children’s health and education.
More than 270 million children are out of school, a crisis exacerbated by conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan and beyond. Together, this new funding will enable Theirworld to drive forward its mission to ensure that every child has the best start in life, a safe place to learn and skills for the future.
“We are deeply grateful to the El-Erian Family Foundation, the Andrew Carnegie Foundation and Coefficient Giving for their support of Theirworld’s work in global education. At a time of growing conflict and pressure on aid systems, these investments send a powerful message that education remains essential to building peace, security and opportunity for future generations.” Theirworld President, Justin van Fleet
“We recognise the crucial role that education plays in transforming the lives of young people. By supporting the inspirational work of Theirworld, we hope to positively impact the lives of children in the most difficult places to reach – and leveraging technology and innovation to make quality education even more accessible to many.” Anna and Mohamed El Erian, of the El-Erian Family Foundation
“We're delighted to support Theirworld's Global Youth Ambassadors in advancing peace and security through education, and in giving young leaders a real role in the decisions that shape their futures.” Ambika Kapur of the Andrew Carnegie Foundation
“Coefficient Giving is proud to support Theirworld's work in identifying new approaches to financing children's health and education. As traditional aid systems face mounting pressure, I think it's increasingly important to invest in the infrastructure that will help children thrive.” Hetty Kovach, Senior Policy Advisor on the Global Aid Policy at Coefficient Giving
