Sarah Brown speaks on ‘I.T. Girls’ panel at WOW festival

Theirworld’s President Sarah Brown spoke today on a panel on opening up the benefits of  technology for more girls and women. Sarah was joined by Africa Gathering’s Mariéme Jamme, Facebook’s VP for EMEA Nicola Mendelsohn, Code Club founder Clare Sutcliffe and the Southbank Centre’s Artistic Director Jude Kelly as chair. The panel was part of a week-long programme full of talks, workshops and performances at the Women of the World festival.

Discussed at the event were the gender gap both at computing qualifications in schools and in digital businesses and the impact the internet and mobile phones can have on learning for those girls who are unable to go to school. A wide range of questions came from the audience: from women working in the digital sector addressing its culture, parents wanting to know more about coding to young women taking computing at GCSE level in the UK.
