For many teenagers, life is about studying, friends and too much time on TikTok. However, some girls are forced to give this up and drop out of school for married life and motherhood.
In Uganda, there is a high rate of teenage pregnancies, especially in rural regions like the Rwenzori Mountains. The girls are forced to raise children without much-needed support or resources, while the children grow up in vulnerable conditions.
Globally, one in four girls is married before the age of 18. The earlier a girl marries, the more likely it is she will drop out of school early. What’s more, child marriage reduces girls’ expected earnings in adulthood by 9%. Training and education could change this.
That’s why we’re working with Ugandan non-profit, Snow Home Alliance for Skills Development, to provide teenage mothers with vocational training and entrepreneurial skills to support them to continue their education.

Education like this can also protect girls from child marriage, empowering them to make their own choices. For Kezia Kabanyoro, who was orphaned at a young age alongside her three siblings and forced to work as a housemaid for a low income, fully sponsored hairdressing training changed everything.
It gave her the skills and confidence to start her own mobile hairdressing business in her local community. Now she earns a steady income and can provide for her family.
Partnerships between businesses and nonprofits can make a meaningful difference when young people’s futures are at risk of being lost to conflict and emergencies. By working together, organisations like HP and Theirworld have helped thousands of children continue learning during war in Ukraine.
